I have always been drawn to the natural world, so when at 14 my aunt gave me a 35mm camera, I started taking photographs of rocks, streams, and trees. Although I have expanded my horizons since then, decades later I still find myself with the same interests.
in 1981 I bought my first large format 4x5 field camera in a small camera shop in Brattleboro, Vermont. Adjusting from a 35mm single reflex camera to a large format camera took some time, but I found the slow contemplative nature of working with a 4x5 camera a perfect fit. Today I still use a 4x5 film camera for most of my work and continue to create photographic prints using traditional darkroom chemistry and techniques.
My work has been influenced by many photographers, such as Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro, Paul Strand, Bruce Barnbaum, and Fay Godwin. However, I am very lucky to have spent some time with John Sexton, Mark Citret, Fred Picker, and David Usher. I am deeply grateful to each of them.
